Infomercials starring Cathy Mitchell [UMBRELLA]
I used to love watching infomercials on cable TV growing up, whenever I had a chance. (It’s still fun today but it doesn’t hit the same XD.) I actually have just recently started to really appreciate Cathy Mitchell, who hosts a ton of kitchen gadget infomercials. She has a very fun and dynamic style which I think makes her a good candidate for vidding—plus the unusual products themselves.
I love her, I love the odd “USA home cooking” recipes that show up in these (she always manages to use a can of biscuits), and I love all the classic infomercial things, like the black and white footage of someone failing to do something or other. Cathy-specific gadgets include the “Red Copper”/“Red Titan” pan series and her “Dump” series of easy cookbooks.
Here’s a short one for a massive pan (Red Copper Big Time Pan):
Here’s a long one for an electric grill (Xpress Redi-Set-Go):
And here’s a playlist of a bunch of them:
Columbo (TV 1968-2003)
Columbo is probably my favorite TV series of all time. If you’re unaware, Columbo is a murder mystery serial. Lt. Columbo is a police detective who puts on an aura of naivety and friendliness in order to catch the criminals (always rich, intelligent, powerful individuals) with logic and mindgames.
I love Peter Falk as Columbo, of course. I also love the criminals and how sure of themselves they always are. The banter between Columbo and the murderers is the meat of the show. I love the way Columbo looks, also: the colors, the cinematography, etc.
You can start with any episode, but my favorites are probably A Stitch in Crime with Leonard Nimoy, A Friend in Deed, and A Matter of Honor.
闘牌伝説アカギ | Touhai Densetsu Akagi | Akagi (Anime and Manga)
Akagi is about mahjong—but really it’s more about the highly intelligent titular character who is obsessed with gambling and life-or-death games. This series is written by Nobuyuki Fukumoto who also wrote Gambling Apocolypse Kaiji.
Akagi is really the star of the show. I love how he always comes out on top even in the most unreasonable situations. Like Columbo, I love how Akagi plays intimate mindgames with his opponents. The mahjong aspect of it is great too, though it seems impossible to vid. Washizu is probably my favorite Akagi character—I love how his impression of Akagi changes throughout the series from dismissive to intrigued to obsessed. For the manga in particular, I also love the odd yet dynamic artwork. (The anime is good on this too, but it’s just different).
The opening of the anime:
And a fan-made motion video of a scene from the comic:
Peep Show (2003 TV)
Mark is my favorite character (although I love Jez as well of course). Their awful relationship is great. I feel like I can’t say much more about this show except to reiterate that I love it.
作りたい女と食べたい女 | Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna | She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat (TV)
I actually did not realize the second season of this had come out until I nominated it! This is a very cute and heartwarming TV adaptation of a manga about two women who bond over their shared love of eating and cooking, and later fall in love <3.
I love their relationship. I really especially like how much Nomoto-san loves Kasuga-san. The food/cooking aspect of the show is super fun too. I haven’t watched the second season yet, but I’ve read the comics—I also love the larger friendship group that forms in the second half of the series! It’s very sweet.
Here’s a promotional vid about the drama:
Zucker Abrahams and Zucker collaborations [UMBRELLA]
My goal here is to include everything that ZAZ have all three worked on together, which to my understanding is:
- The Kentucky Fried Movie
- Airplane!
- Police Squad! (Maybe just the first episode? I think this is open to interpretation).
- Top Secret!
- Ruthless People
- The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!
(Of course, feel free to include anything under this umbrella that I’ve missed).
I haven’t actually watched all the movies/TV that this covers, but I thought the unusual visual language of these movies could make an interesting vid.
マルサの女 | A Taxing Woman (1987) [SAFETY]
This movie is the story of Itakura, a tax inspector in Japan. She investigates tax evasion, eventually coming toe-to-toe with the yakuza. It’s a funny movie with some exciting scenes.
I love Itakura, and I also really enjoy the tax investigators and the lengths they go to to find fraud. I also enjoy the relationship between Itakura and Gondo (and how fruitless and rather tragic it is).
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017) [SAFETY]
This is a biopic based on the life of the man who created Wonder Woman and his wife and their life partner. It was directed by Angela Robinson who also directed D.E.B.S.
I love Elizabeth, Olive, and William’s relationship. I thought this was a very exciting movie and I liked all the unusual aspects of their relationship (the BDSM of it all!).
MASH (TV)
This was one of my favorite old TV shows to watch when I was a kid. At the time I favored Radar, but as an adult I like Hawkeye more, although Radar remains in my top favorites alongside Klinger and Father Mulcahy. The entire ensemble cast is really what makes the show though.
It’s hard for me to imagine a Father Mulcahy-centered vid but if you want to take that on I’d love to see it?
myhouse.wad (Video Game)
I was really excited to see this come up in the nominations this year! This is a really unusual Doom II mod that is inspired by House of Leaves. I like the fourth wall breaks/meta stuff in this. I like the doomcute and the Doom guy constantly mugging in the bottom of the screen while existential horrors reign. I like the serious aspects of the story, but I also like the disparity between the sometimes dark tone and the Doom-iness of it all.
I enjoyed this Let’s Play because the LPer is experienced with Doom and reacts to things I never would have picked up on.
